Why photogrammetry accuracy is rarely just one number
Teams often compress accuracy into a single value: someone cites the GSD, the software shows a reprojection error, and that gets treated as proof that the whole model is dependable. That is too simplistic. According to Pix4D, GSD first describes ground resolution per pixel, not the final horizontal or vertical correctness of the product.
Reliable outputs need several layers to line up: image resolution, sharpness, overlap, camera calibration, georeferencing, and independent quality control. Pix4D explicitly separates GCPs, which improve relative and absolute accuracy, from checkpoints, which assess absolute accuracy.
The standards moved in the same direction. ASPRS Edition 2, Version 2, adopted on June 28, 2024, reinforced RMSE-based reporting, raised the minimum checkpoint count to 30, and introduced the concept of 3D positional accuracy.

Voxelia processes image datasets into usable outputs. That makes data quality assessment more important than isolated hardware claims or a single software metric.
Which metrics actually matter
In practice, four indicators matter most: GSD as a resolution signal, reprojection error as a calibration and marking signal, checkpoint RMSE as a product-accuracy signal, and the stability of the camera calibration itself. None of them replaces the others.
Pix4D defines reprojection error as the difference between the marked image position and the reprojected position of a computed point. It therefore depends directly on calibration, orientation, and marking quality. Pix4D states that it should be less than or equal to one pixel as a quality indication.

Quick interpretation
GSD asks: how fine can we see? Checkpoints ask: how correct is the result? Reprojection asks: how well does the internal calibration fit the imagery?
What GCPs and checkpoints really do
Pix4D is explicit: GCPs georeference the model and improve relative and absolute accuracy, while checkpoints are used for quality assessment. Evaluating a model from GCP residuals alone is therefore incomplete.
For many projects Pix4D lists a minimum of three GCPs to scale, rotate, and locate the model, while recommending five to ten GCPs distributed across the site. For automatic detection, targets should be at least 20 times the average GSD.
When accuracy is formally reported, the bar rises. ASPRS now uses a minimum of 30 checkpoints for compliant assessment and caps large projects at 120 checkpoints. That matters anywhere a 3D model, orthophoto, or digital twin becomes a planning input instead of a visual asset.
GCP residuals are not an independent final test
If the points help steer the model, their residuals should not be mistaken for an external product-accuracy check.
Why good-looking models still fail
Many datasets do not fail dramatically. They fail quietly: the model looks plausible, but roof edges drift, flat areas ripple, or absolute height is off. Those issues become visible only when the model is measured, exported, or used for planning.
Pix4D highlights strong overlap, sharp images, rich texture, and optionally GCPs or manual tie points as factors that improve aerial triangulation. It also notes that accuracy can improve if each point is found in at least five images. Agisoft adds a calibration perspective: unrealistic cx, cy, b1, or b2 estimates are warning signs that the camera solution may be wrong.

How much accuracy different outputs really need
Different workflows tolerate different levels of uncertainty. A quick viewer, sales visualization, or internal review model may be useful even without a formal checkpoint assessment. CAD, BIM, roof planning, planimetric orthophotos, and quantity-related outputs usually need a stricter basis.
In practice, the more the model will be measured, vectorized, or used for procurement and planning, the more independent checkpoints, stable coordinate handling, and plausible calibration matter. That difference between a visually convincing model and a planning-ready model is central to Voxelia’s work.
If you already have imagery, we first determine what level of accuracy can actually be defended and which outputs are realistic. In many cases existing imagery can still be processed well. In others, a narrower use case is more honest than overstating what the dataset can support.
The downstream use case decides
The real question is not whether software can export something in 3D, but whether geometry, coordinate reference, and quality statement are strong enough for the next team that has to work with it.
